Sally Pettus paints from a studio near Ground Zero and frequently walks the perimeter of the vast
site absorbing the activity and progress of its re-building. Her paintings of the area show reflections
of the new construction in polished granite and glass surfaces that include cranes perched on top
of towers and I-beams refracted in the windows of parked cars. Along with these images of the
enormous site, the paintings contain fragments of the other now iconic buildings in its surroundings,
including Century 21, the Millenium Hilton Hotel and Trinity Church. These paintings record a
moment in time and mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. KS Art's Tribeca
location is a fitting context for these artworks.
Sally Pettus lives in New York City, and has exhibited paintings and sculpture there since the mid-
seventies. She was commissioned to make a large bronze fountain, entitled Quantum Leaf, another
artwork that depicts the power of living, dying, and regeneration. The sculpture is in downtown Des
Moines, and is owned by the Des Moines Art Center.
